Steps for Using The Power Of Positive thinking In Business-

Published by Nitin Shah [nitin_shah] on 2008/11/1 (429 reads)
There are seven steps for the application of positive thinking to solve a business problem. They are-

  1. Define the situation
Define the problem clearly yet comprehensively. This will Give you a clear target on which to focus your efforts. Lessen any anxiety you may be feeling about the situation. In defining a situation, we need to focus on two areas. The first is our view of the situation. The second is the manner in which we conduct our self in dealing with the people. this is because all situation in business no matter how simple or complex, require that we interact effectively with other people. Remember a problem well defined is half a problem solved.
  2. Find what are you telling yourself?
Find what are your thoughts regarding the situation you just defined? What are you saying to yourself? Remember your thoughts about any situation you are facing can work for or against you. Your self talk will tell you whether you are thinking rationally and clearly or letting the negative emotions such as fear, anger etc get the better of you.
  3. What is your desired outcome?
By now you should be clear about the situation youre facing and view it in an appropriately positive and constructive light.
Now you can work towards specifying the outcome you desire. The outcome should be expressed in measurable ways. It should include both quantitative and qualitative measurements. For this you should follow the following steps:
    • Setting goals: Your goals should be specific, measurable, action oriented, realistic and time bound. Its always useful to write down your goals. Because orally one can get away with vague ideas but they become concrete when written, as you become aware of any vagueness in them.
    • Affirmations: It is one of the most important elements of positive thinking. To affirm means to make firm. An affirmation is a strong, positive statement that some thing is already so. It is a way of making firm that which you are thinking.
    • Imaging: In imaging one not only thinks of the hoped for goal but sees/ visualizes it with tremendous intensity.
  4. Access your positive traits
After you have identified your negative attitudinal barriers in the last step, take steps to eliminate them. In doing this, you will create a fertile environment for cultivating positive behaviors inherent in all of us. The following are the specific behavioral traits of a positive thinking person:
    • Optimism
    • Enthusiasm
    • Belief
    • Integrity
    • Courage
    • Confidence
    • Determination
    • Patience
    • Calmness
    • Focus
    • These are traits that help a person in facing challenging situations and in getting the best out of them.
  5. Rehearse the situation mentally.
According to one of the Wall Street Journal article, today most of the successful businessman attribute there success to six activities, mental rehearsing being one of them. By mentally rehearsing every facet and feeling of what needs to happen for you to obtain your desired outcome, you would vastly improve your odds of attaining it.
  6. Take action
Now you will be in a good position to take positive action. Its a good idea to create a plan outlining the specific steps youll need to take. This is an organic process, not a mechanical one, and you will discover that some challenging situations will extend over periods of weeks and months and thus will involve numerous sub-steps. A detailed plan will help you think through how you are going to approach each phase of the situation.
  7. Access the results of your actions.
this will help you in finding which of your actions were more effective compared to other actions, so that in future you can repeat what works for you and also correct any shortcomings you may have identified.

As you would have already observed, this model of solving problems is similar to those already followed in business organizations with only few variations. These variations are in respect of steps 2, 3, 4 and 5 which are all related to developing and using positive thinking to solve the business challenges. This model incorporates the basic management principles of planning, implementing and evaluating. This structure makes it possible for anybody in the organization to learn and apply positive thinking methods to business challenges with measurable outcomes.
